Water softeners in Greenwood

Softener and drinking-water help for the rural community east of Midland and the acreages around it.

Greenwood is a rural community in eastern Midland County, outside the Midland city limits, made up largely of homes on acreage. That means water comes from a small community water system or a private well rather than from the City of Midland, and the treatment you need depends on which.

What a state-commissioned study found

In 2008, a feasibility study prepared for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality by the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology looked at the Greenwood Water System. At the time it served about 800 people through 267 connections, from six wells 100 to 190 feet deep in the Ogallala aquifer. The study reported fluoride typically between 3.4 and 4.5 mg/L, above the 2 mg/L secondary standard and at times above the 4 mg/L limit, and arsenic between 0.0108 and 0.0241 mg/L in 2006 and 2007, above the 0.010 mg/L limit. It also noted high dissolved solids and alkalinity in the local groundwater. Options it weighed included buying water from Midland, central reverse osmosis and point-of-use treatment.

Those numbers are old. Check your system's current Consumer Confidence Report, which TCEQ's Drinking Water Watch also lists, for today's results.

Private wells around Greenwood

TCEQ doesn't regulate wells that serve a single household, and private well owners aren't required to test, according to the Texas Tribune. Texas A&M AgriLife and the Texas Well Owner Network have held low-cost screenings in Midland and Ector counties for arsenic, E. coli, nitrate and salinity. A full lab test is the better basis for choosing equipment.

What usually fits here

  • A softener sized for very hard, high-mineral water
  • Under-sink RO for drinking water, chosen with fluoride and arsenic in mind
  • Sediment pre-filtration on wells

Common questions

Does a softener remove fluoride or arsenic?

No. Softeners target hardness. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is a common way to reduce fluoride and arsenic in drinking water; confirm with performance data and a retest.

Is Greenwood on City of Midland water?

Greenwood is outside the city. Homes there are generally on a community water system or a private well, so check which one serves you.
